Top Five Historical Moments IAM 2500-002
In class, we were given the challenge to rank our top five key moments in history. This was a challenge for most of us including myself because how am I supposed to only pick five when there are so many important parts of history when it comes to media and technological advances? I will admit when we discussed this in class after all our groups came to decide our ultimate top fives I thought some groups were dead wrong, and I still stand by that.
My person top five moments were:
1947: Bell Laboratory scientists William Shockley, John Bardeen, and Walter Brattain invented the transistor. The invention of the transistor revolutionized electronics and created the opportunity for modernization of modern computing. Without that computers would still be big and bulky and smartphones, laptops, the web, and more would not exist.
1989: Tim Berners Lee proposes the World Wide Web at CERN laboratories. The world wide web is the reason we can connect with people from around the globe. Before the www information was more sporadic and with the www we can share knowledge, links, etc. seamlessly.
1971: Intel releases the Intel 4044 CPU, the first microprocessor. With this creation, it has an entire CPU onto a single chip, allowing for the creation of affordable personal computers. This made computing easier and shaped the digital age.
2007: Steve Jobs introduced the iPhone. With the introduction of the iPhone, you can access music, internet, maps, photos, and more all within the phone. No small keyboard buttons to fight with, but rather a keyboard on the screen. This revolutionized modern computing and led up to the smartphone era we know now.
2022: OpenAI releases ChatGPT. With the release of ChatGPT we can see what modern artificial intelligence can do. This marks a milestone for AI and how much humans can interact with computers, for better or for worse…
However my groups top five were:
1947: The transistor was invented.
1968: Intel was formed and created one of the largest chip manufacturers.
1998: Google was born!
2004: Facebook was born!!
1984: Apple releases the Macintosh.
In all I found this to be a difficult challenge after learning what everyone's reasonsings were and mindsets. I think if we all had the same idea of what was important and why then we would have had an easier time deciding, but that's not how life works out. I ranked mine with the idea that if this (the macintosh, google, etc.) was not made we would not have that (iphone, etc). I tried to keep it simple and short when I ranked mine. Overall my group and I had the same ideas and found it relatively easy to choose until we had to decide who fit the best in spot 3. When I did this project at home and with my group it got me thinking about lots of “what ifs?”.
